How to Use a Pallet Jack: Step-by-Step Guide
By PalletCorner Team β’ January 11, 2026
A pallet jack (also called a pallet truck or pump truck) is one of the most common material handling tools in warehouses, retail stores, and shipping facilities. Here's how to use one safely and efficiently.
Manual Pallet Jack: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Inspect Before Use
Before operating, check:
- Wheels for damage or debris
- Fork condition (no bends or cracks)
- Handle mechanism works smoothly
- Hydraulic system (no leaks)
Step 2: Position the Jack
- Approach the pallet from the front or side entry
- Ensure forks are at the lowest position
- Align forks with pallet entry points
Step 3: Insert the Forks
- Push the jack forward until forks fully enter the pallet
- Forks should extend through the entire pallet
- Center the load between the forks
Step 4: Raise the Load
- Pump the handle up and down to raise the forks
- Lift just enough to clear the floor (2-3 inches)
- Don't over-pump β higher isn't better
Step 5: Move the Load
- Pull the jack toward you (don't push)
- Keep a clear view of your path
- Move slowly and smoothly
- Watch for pedestrians and obstacles
Step 6: Lower and Exit
- Position the pallet at its destination
- Lower the forks using the release lever
- Once forks touch down, pull jack backward
- Exit the pallet slowly to avoid catching
Electric Pallet Jack: Key Differences
Electric pallet jacks operate similarly but with powered functions:
- Raising/lowering: Button-operated, no pumping
- Movement: Powered drive, use throttle control
- Speed: Variable speed, go slow when loaded
- Braking: Release throttle to stop (may have brake)
Safety Tips
Do's β
- Wear safety shoes
- Check weight capacity before loading
- Keep hands on the handle
- Look where you're going
- Use horn/warning at corners
Don'ts β
- Never ride on a manual pallet jack
- Don't exceed weight capacity
- Don't leave loaded jack unattended
- Avoid uneven or wet surfaces
- Never lift people on forks
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pushing instead of pulling: Always pull toward you for control
- Forks not fully inserted: Can tip the load
- Lifting too high: Creates instability
- Moving too fast: Leads to accidents
- Ignoring maintenance: Causes breakdowns
