Pallet Size Guide

Standard Pallet Sizes & Dimensions Chart for 2026

Use this guide to compare standard pallet size options across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. We break down pallet dimensions, common use cases, rack fit, and realistic load ranges so buyers can choose a footprint that works in the real world.

Most common US size

48" x 40"

The GMA footprint that fits most warehouse and retail programs.

Key EU size

1200 x 800 mm

EPAL 1 remains the most recognized Euro pallet format.

Match size to handling

Trailer fit, rack beams, and fork entry matter as much as footprint.

Why pallet size matters

Buyers often search for standard pallet dimensions because they are solving more than one problem at the same time. The pallet has to fit the freight lane, the warehouse rack, the fork opening, and the product overhang rule. A footprint that saves 2 inches on paper can create more damage, wasted trailer space, and operator slowdowns once the load reaches the dock.

We recommend starting with your primary shipping network. If your operation is mostly domestic US, the 48x40 pallet is still the default answer. If you ship into Europe, pooled systems, or mixed export programs, you may need an EPAL or ISO-driven size instead of forcing one footprint into every workflow. For a deeper overview of pallet construction, read our complete pallet guide.

Quick buying checklist

  • Match the pallet footprint to your primary trailer or container first. A 48x40 pallet is efficient in US domestic freight, while 1200 x 800 mm is easier to optimize in many European networks.
  • Check rack beam spacing before buying. A pallet that works on the floor can still fail in rack storage if deck boards, stringers, or support bars are undersized.
  • Confirm fork opening and entry style. Standard hand pallet trucks, electric pallet trucks, and automated systems do not all tolerate the same bottom-deck design.
  • Plan for compliance early. Export wood pallets usually need ISPM 15 heat treatment, while sanitary operations often switch to plastic for washdown and contamination control.

Global standard pallet size chart

The table below combines the most useful regional standards buyers compare in 2026. The list lines up with the most common footprints referenced by ISO 6780, GMA practice, and EPAL handling programs. Use it to narrow the correct pallet size before you lock in material, deck style, or load rating.

StandardDimensions (in)Dimensions (mm)Typical industriesWhy buyers choose it
GMA / North America48" x 40"1219 x 1016Retail, grocery, general manufacturing, 53-foot trailer shippingThe default US pallet size. Fits most warehouse pallet jacks, selective rack beams, and inbound dock programs.
Euro / EPAL 147.2" x 31.5"1200 x 800European retail, FMCG, export consolidationCommon in EU supply chains where EPAL quality rules and return systems matter.
Euro / EPAL 247.2" x 39.4"1200 x 1000Automotive, industrial packaging, UK distributionMore deck depth than EPAL 1 and closer to many industrial export loads.
Asia / JIS43.3" x 43.3"1100 x 1100Japan, Korea, electronics, food processingA square pallet that loads cleanly into many Asian warehouse systems and containers.
Australia45.9" x 45.9"1165 x 1165Australia retail, beverage, domestic transportSized to work with Australian racking and rail systems rather than US trailer footprints.
ISO 6780 List Size42" x 42"1067 x 1067Drums, telecom, mixed export loadsUseful when square loads, drums, or special rack geometry drive pallet selection.

Where each pallet size works best

48" x 40" wins in North American warehousing because it works with common pallet truck forks, 96-inch rack beams, and 53-foot trailers. It is also the easiest size to source in wood, plastic, and export-ready variants. If your buyers, carriers, and 3PL partners are US-based, this size reduces surprises.

1200 x 800 mm is the safe choice for European replenishment, retail backrooms, and pooled pallet programs. It is smaller than the GMA footprint, which improves aisle handling in some European facilities but changes trailer cube and rack planning in US buildings.

1200 x 1000 mm fits industrial exports well when buyers want more deck depth for cartons, drums, or heavier unit loads. It is a practical crossover size for some global operations because it supports more product depth than EPAL 1 without moving all the way to a US 48x40 pallet.

1100 x 1100 mm and 1165 x 1165 mm matter when the destination network is already standardized around Asia or Australia. These pallets can be efficient in-market, but they may reduce trailer density in US domestic freight. That tradeoff should be measured, not guessed.

Weight capacity comparison by pallet type

A footprint alone does not answer load questions. Static load, dynamic load, and rack load all change the right buying decision. Static load measures a pallet sitting still on the floor. Dynamic load measures movement by pallet jack or forklift. Rack load is the most demanding number because the pallet is supported only at the beams. We recommend checking beam spacing and using a conservative safety margin for any rack load.

FAQ: standard pallet dimensions

What is the standard pallet size in the United States?

The standard pallet size in the United States is **48" x 40"**. It is often called the GMA pallet size and is the most common footprint for grocery, retail, and general warehouse freight.

What are standard pallet dimensions in Europe?

The most common European pallet dimensions are **1200 x 800 mm** for EPAL 1 and **1200 x 1000 mm** for EPAL 2. The smaller EPAL 1 footprint is common in retail distribution and pooled return systems.

How much weight can a standard pallet hold?

A standard pallet can hold very different loads depending on material and support conditions. Many 48x40 wood pallets handle around **2,500 to 3,500 lbs dynamic** and **4,600 to 6,000 lbs static**, while rackable plastic pallets can go higher in supported storage.

Does ISO define pallet size standards?

Yes. **ISO 6780** lists internationally recognized pallet footprints used in major logistics regions. It does not make every pallet identical, but it gives buyers a framework for comparing the sizes most likely to appear in global shipping programs.

Should I choose wood or plastic for standard pallet sizes?

Choose wood when low upfront cost and repairability matter most. Choose plastic when hygiene, moisture resistance, consistent dimensions, or international reuse matter more than initial unit cost.
